Jeff.

Spotlight no longer sees anything. I select any folder on my desktop, or in other folders, and spotlight does not find them, or display them.

It simply says, NO RESULTS.
This symptom emerged prior to my before making a USB stick bootable startup disk.
I assume they are unrelated.
Can I reinstall SPOTLIGHT ?

Answer
Reinstall? No. Reset? Yes.

System preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

Drag your hard drive into the "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations" pane.

That wipes out Spotlights index on your hard drive. Reboot.

Go to the same spot and remove your hard drive from the Privacy Pane.
