About Jeffrey J. Wrobel
Expertise
I can answer OS compatibility questions, from OS 7 to OS X 10.5.x Leopard. I have extensive experience in software installation, use, and troubleshooting as well as many aspects of high level hardware repair. Any questions about peripherals and their Mac-compatibility are also welcome. I am very current in all aspects of the Max OS, while having an excellent breadth of knowledge of older machines. My work keeps me in constant contact with Mac suppliers, products, and problems, enabling me to not only draw on my past experience, but also to add to that experience every day. Living in Rhode Island with family near Cape Cod, Mass has proven to be a bit lacking in Mac popularity (Yankees are slow to change), but momentum is building for Apple.

Experience

Past/Present clients
My life experience has taken me from the US Army to working with the criminally insane. Pursued a philosophy degree while working in pyschology, then ended up doing graphic design, marketing modular construction products, and ultimately starting the computer business that I now own. At 41 years old, I plan to make my triumphant return to college and get a master's degree in philosophy. Clients include a multi-million dollar international manufacturing firm, a nationwide jewelry/gemstone distributor, numerous town libraries, 2 school districts, a few celebrities, a famous author, a prominent film maker, Brown University & RISD faculty and students, and numerous small businesses and individuals in Rhode Island, Cape Cod, and Boston. I also have a nationwide Powerbook/iBook/Macbook repair program and I sell refurbished Mac parts. The growth of my company, which was a record-breaker in 2007, has been a direct result of my customer service and the experience gained through helping the folks that use All Experts.

Subject: Files from OS 9.1 to 10.5.3- I think?

Question
I have been working on this for two solid days and should be committed now. I have files on my G3 in QuarkXpress, etc. of art work I have done. I now have a G5 10.5.3. I thought I could network the two and transfer files.I archived my art on 100MB zip discs and can't open them on G5. (program upgrades, or lack of same program,etc.)G3 doesn't burn CDs.I think PDFs would work? But can't do on G3.I transferred files using a memory stick, but they open on the G5 as a grey box that says "exec" in the corner.HELP me! Please. I need this art for a portfolio,I am trying to get teaching credentials.

Answer
Dear Heidi,
Your problem is that you are spanning 6 operating systems, trying to get it to work without any updates to the files themselves.  To be able to simply drag them onto your USB drive and then copy them onto your newer machine running 10.5 would make too much sense, you know?  That "exec" file is a UNIX command file icon that the system puts on the file because it can't speci

PDFs will work, but they would need an update once they are transferred over.  You would need a version of Acrobat Pro for OS 9, though.  Often, when you transfer stuff to the USB drives, they change a bit because instead of the Mac HFS+ format, the USB sticks use a FAT 32 format that Mac can read, but is usually used in certain Windows environments.  Occasionally, you can RIGHT CLICK (CONTROL plus regular click on Mac one-button mouse) and choose OPEN WITH below the OPEN command and manually select the program that SHOULD open it.  If that doesn't work, I usually have luck zipping or stuffing (.ZIP or .SIT) the file first, THEN drag it from the older computer onto the USB drive then insert the USB in the newer machine and drag it to the drive of the newer machine.  Then you can use Stuffit Expander to open it.  If you don't have the Expander, go to this URL and download it:

I hope I responded in time.

Good luck, Heidi!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Wrobel
