Expert: Elia Kanaki Date: 6/6/2008 Subject: Unable to reload scanner CD in iMac OS9 front slot loading
Question QUESTION: Very prompt response to my original query, Thanks, I'm not sure I understand how connecting the scanner to a USB will work as it is already conected to the iMac via the USB (as is the printer). My problem is that when I attempt to open the scanner and click on Vistascan the computer tells me that no scanner exists and I am unable to reload the scanner as the computer refuses to accept the AstroScan CD. I can push the CD into the slot but nothing happens. I think the problem is mechanical and I am left wondering if I should upend the machine and tinker with its parts. Problem is - I know nothing about the mechanics of the iMac.
Regards
Bill
ANSWER: Bill,
I don't think I've answered any question re: USB and scanner.
As for the problem you describe here is what I think:
There are 2 unrelated problems.
1. Computer doesn't recognize the scanner (most probably missing driver)
2. Your Mac doesn't accept CD.
Will you please do a test and put in any other CD that you can play on your CD player.
This will tell us if the problem relates to CD drive or to AstroScan CD.
Thank you
Elia

QUESTION: Dear Elia
The Mac isn't accepting CDs. I have tried reinstalling the Mac applications without success. The CD will go in but the motor that draws the disc in does not seem to be working. Am I looking at expensive repairs or is there something I can do myself. My past experience was to renew the battery on the clock. I'm sending this via Windows Vists PC and not on the iMac. Regards
ANSWER: May I ask why do you rate my knowledge as 5?
I would get Apple certified tech look into the problem.
It can be broken CD or Logic Board issue.

QUESTION: Dear Elia, My rating applies to the first person who answered my question. Perhaps my original question was ambiguous but I didn't think the expert understood my problem as stated. You have been very helpful and in recommending taking the iMac for repair you have confirmed my earlier fears. Thank you
Answer I'm totally at loss.
You rated my knowledge as 5. I went back and re-read our correspondence and i'm failing to see where I could show limited knowledge.
Unfortunately your problem seem to be mechanical and I wouldn't advice anybody without special training trying to replace the CD in apple computers. You may end up with much more hassles then you can forecast. Just yesterday i was troubleshooting a problem where newly installed CD read everything but don't let booting up from System DVD.
So in my opinion $50 for tech to install it is very worthwhile.
