AboutJeffrey J. Wrobel Expertise I can answer OS compatibility questions, from OS 7 to OS X 10.5.x Leopard. I have extensive experience in software installation, use, and troubleshooting as well as many aspects of high level hardware repair. Any questions about peripherals and their Mac-compatibility are also welcome. I am very current in all aspects of the Max OS, while having an excellent breadth of knowledge of older machines. My work keeps me in constant contact with Mac suppliers, products, and problems, enabling me to not only draw on my past experience, but also to add to that experience every day. Living in Rhode Island with family near Cape Cod, Mass has proven to be a bit lacking in Mac popularity (Yankees are slow to change), but momentum is building for Apple.
Experience
Past/Present clients My life experience has taken me from the US Army to working with the criminally insane. Pursued a philosophy degree while working in pyschology, then ended up doing graphic design, marketing modular construction products, and ultimately starting the computer business that I now own. At 41 years old, I plan to make my triumphant return to college and get a master's degree in philosophy.
Clients include a multi-million dollar international manufacturing firm, a nationwide jewelry/gemstone distributor, numerous town libraries, 2 school districts, a few celebrities, a famous author, a prominent film maker, Brown University & RISD faculty and students, and numerous small businesses and individuals in Rhode Island, Cape Cod, and Boston. Expert: Jeffrey J. Wrobel Date: 7/10/2008 Subject: online virus scan
Question In the last few weeks, I have been getting an unwelcome, insidious and unstoppable online virus scan for PCs, even tho I have a Mac (G4, OS 10.4.11 and OS 9.2). I have used five different browsers (Safari, FF, Camino, Netscape & Opera) and try to block all popups, but the damned thing keeps invading and "scanning". Once it starts, I can't stop it, no matter how I try, clicking "cancel" on its popup window(s) and all the additional "warnings" to no avail. The only thing I can do is quit the browser and start over again. It is a real pain in the butt, and my ISP can't seem to help. I have tried a few browser-specific adblockers, and though Safari and FF seem to block for a while, somehow it still gets in. I've used ClamVax, and my machine is clear. I have even trashed browsers and DL'd new ones, but no joy there either. I'd love to send something to the originator and zap their system. I'm not the only one who has this problem, am I? Any suggestions? Thank you!!
Answer Dear Alan,
This is NOT an isolated problem. The greedy makers of spyware/adware have learned to exploit cross-platform web applications to mess with ANY computer, not just PCS--although PCs are MUCH worse at dealing with these problems and much more prone to get them in the first place because there are no "permissions" within Windows that would prevent lowly files from affecting system files.
What you need to do is open Safari and go to the PREFERENCES and open up the Security tab. Try unchecking "Enable plug-ins,"and "Enable JavaScript," and check the stored Databases by clicking on "Show Databases" and erase anything in there.
One more excellent way to block this garbage is to purchase one of the best software investments for the money out there. Objective Development's Little Snitch is a true software firewall. Most so-called "firewalls" are not firewalls at all because they only monitor and potentially block INCOMING communication and not outgoing. Much of these problem malware programs and scripts need to communicate with their creators or advertisers and Little Snitch would catch communication either way and give you the opportunity to block or allow the communications. It is only $25 and is simple to install and use, as well as very powerful. Go to this URL and download a trial to see if you can block your nasty script:
