Macs/Apples/Can't get Photo Booth or Quicktime video to work after OS upgrade

I have a macbook pro/intel...upgraded recently to mountain lion.  Some kinds, but o.k. in general.  I make music I usually use Photo Booth to a last resort quicktime.
Doesn't work...when I load Photo booth, I get a black window with a rotating circle and it doesn't readily clear up  to video myself.
When I load quicktime player,   File/New Movie Recording....I get error message "the operation could not be completed."
None of this ever happened before

Thanks for writing! Does this happen in just your user account or others as well?  If you haven't already tried, log in using another account and test it.  If it works fine, you may have a login item conflict or preference conflict in your first user account.
Using your system preferences, load "users and groups" and click on your user, then "login items" and look at these items.  Disable ones that don't make sense, or if you'd just like to try this once, you can hold down SHIFT just after logging in to prevent launch of all login items.

Also, you might try repairing permissions using disk utility; /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.  Launch it, select your hard drive and click "repair permissions."

Good luck and let me know what results you get.

I worked in IT for ten years with a specialty in Macintosh technologies and Project Management.
I've worked with the Macintosh Operating system and various machines since my first PowerMac 8500 running Mac OS 7.5.3 in 1996. I support my friends and family in keeping their Macs healthy and upgraded. Now I use a MacBook Pro for our home media network and we're pretty much down to iPads and iPhones for daily use.
Most important: I've also worked on PCs for a number of years with various flavors of Windows(95,98,NT4,2000,2000Server,2K3Server,SBS 2K3Server,Mil,XPHome,XPPro, Vista Business), but I've always used the Mac as my platform of preference.
