Magic and Illusion/Effect for a play

Question
I am currently directing a play which opens with a magic effect.  The original script calls for the production of doves, but that isn't feasable in our space.  I would like some ideas for an effect that is:
A. Silent
B.  Majestic or Beautiful
C. inexpensive (less than $300) and with a minimum of large set pieces.

The effect need not be utterly mystifying.  Its main purpose is to set a tone of beauty and wonder.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Tyce

Answer
Can you let me know a little more about this. What play is it? What is the description of the effect in the script? What do you want the audience to feel about this trick? Such as, "I have no idea how that was done?" "This guy is good." "That was beautiful." What theme do you want the effect to convey? Life, death, power over death, redemption? Some of these questions may be answered the same, just try to answer as many as possible. What are the rules about fire in your theatre/performance space?
