Question Hi,
I have a whirlpool "LEB6300PWO". The dryer will put out heat but only low heat, no matter what I have the temp selector on. I have tested everything and all is well. I am very good with electricity and the two things I found that could be wrong are the timer motor or a resistor on the back of the temp selector switch. I was wondering if you could offer any insight on this matter. The schematics for this dryer are lost and I would love to know how to test the resistor but I doubt that is the problem. More than likely I see the timer motor as being bad but I don't want to replace it if it is okay. Can you either offer me a sure fire way to test the timer or give insight as to what you think it might be, Thanks in advance for taking your time to deal with this.
Patrick
Answer for the time being lets ignore the timer and the resistor at the back of your selector switch.
you said you are good with electricity, so lets start there. first i want you to get an ohms reading off of the element itself.....it should be around the 10ohm mark.....if that checks out ok, next were gonna put power to the dryer, start it on high heat, and with a clamp meter, clamp on to one of the red wires going to the heater, what kind of amperage draw are you getting. it should be in the 20 - 24A range.....(rough numbers)
the timer only serves as a switch for 120v of the 240v going to the heater.....the other 120v comes from the centrifugal switch on the motor....and generally if that switch on the timer has failed, the heater element wont heat up at all....but also, if the centrifugal switch on the motor has failed, instead of replacing the timer, you could be replacing the motor, but....one step at a time. but you said there is some heat...as in the coil are lighting up....so....im going to assume the timers ok
as for that resistor....im not really sure what its for.....unless of course i see a diagram....then i would be able to figure it out
im leaning towards the heater element being the problem itself, now before rushing out to buy one, pull yours out first and inspect it...are the coils sagging?, ive seen bra underwires get stuck in em but they still work.....just low heat.....check that out too!
