Major Appliances/Ice on Refrigerator Evaporator

Hi Eric, I have a Kitchen Aid refrigerator with a bottom freezer and French doors on top which is over a year old. There seems to be excessive ice build up on the evaporator. It seems to work all right  now but this summer the ice build up was so bad it was hitting the evaporator fan and I had to use a hair dryer to defrost it. Kitchen Aid is  offering an extended warranty which I'm considering taking even though it is somewhat costly. What do you think the problem is and would the warranty be a good idea.? Thanks, George
