I graduated from Penn State with a degree in Health Policy and Administration. Its been five years and I have been selling insurance ever since (planning group benefits for corporations). My passion is for the cosmetic industry and I feel that I would be excellent in a marketing department, or as a sales representative. How difficult is it to get a position? I plan on going back to school for my masters in marketing as well. Where should I be looking? Its seems like you need to know someone?
Answer Hi Mandy~
While obtaining a masters in marketing never hurts anyone, you can certainly land a job in your desired field without one. As you climb the corporate ladder you will usually---not always---end up earning more money with degrees behind your name.
Without knowing what city you live in, its a bit more difficult to guide you. If you're in a major metropolitan area, chances are there is a cosmetics manufacturing company or beauty industry related company of some sort nearby---certainly the case if you are in Minneapolis, Chicago or on the East or West Coast. Simply applying at these companies for an entry level position in order to get your foot in the door is the approach I would suggest you consider. You may be able to work part time at such a company while you're going to school, or if you impress the right people, you may be offered a great entry level position in a marketing dept.! You can then attend evening and weekend classes as you work on a degree to further your value to that company.
If you have personality, commitment and determination and you demonstrate this in interviews, you will be amazed at the doors it can open for you. Be persistent and follow your heart. I wish you all the best! I can't imagine a more fun and exciting industry.
Best,
Linda Gearke
