Question
Hi Michelle,

I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer.  The first is regarding the new trend in mineral makeup.  I have been using Jane Iredale Pure Pressed powder for about two years on the recommendation of a makeup artist who did make makeup for my wedding.  I like the makeup but find i very expensive compared to Bare Escentuals.  I was out shopping at Sephora today and wanted to buy some Jane Iredale but they apparently don't sell the brand, so they talked me into Bare Escentuals, which they say is better.  It's just a loose powder form.  Do you find these to be comparable, given that the BE is about $20 less?

Also, have you heard of a skin condition called "chicken skin" where the backs of the arms and legs get a small bumpy appearance?  If so, is there any cure or products to help it? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sarah,

The trend on Mineral Makeup isn't necessarily "new", it is just becoming more mainstream as people are becoming informed on the harmful effects of certain cosmetic ingredients.  Mineral Makeup is by far better for your skin.  The main difference between the loose powder form and the pressed is that the loose form is the purest form available (Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide are both natural sunscreens and Mica and Iron Oxides are also natural ingredients from the earth)  When you put the minerals in a pressed from other ingredients are needed to keep it "together"  Not that these ingredients are bad for you, it's just more things that your skin doesn't really need.  Bare Escentuals is a very good line and wasn't always as cheap.  They have been able to lower there prices due to mass marketing and you are paying more for the Jane Iredale name.  If you are happy with the Bare Escentuals I would keep using it.  Before starting my own cosmetic line, I used Bare Escentuals for many years.

As for the little bumps on your arms and legs, these are very common.  It's basically a build up of keratin or "clogged hair follicles"  I get this alot on my legs from wearing jeans or some women get it from wearing nylons all day.  You need to exfoliate the areas daily in the shower with either a loofah or body puff and keep the area moisturized.  You can also try using a body wash with salicylic acid a few times a week (no more than 3-4 days)  This will help open the follicle and should clear it up in a week or two.

I hope this has been helpful to you!  Let me know if you need anything else.
