Makeup & Skincare - How to choose the right red?

Expert: Tyla Smith - 6/9/2009

Question
Hi Tyla,
I love the look of red lips, but it seems that every time I choose a red lipstick it doesn't look right on me. My aunt, who thinks she knows everything, tells me that I keep choosing reds with too much orange in them. How can you tell? I look at them and see red.
So, with blonde hair and cool fair/beige skin, how do I know which red is right for me?
Thanks!!

Answer
When you are looking at the reds for lipstick look for the ones that look a little blue.  Think of the red colors like this... the color of a fire engine is slightly on the orange side, and the color of a bing cherry is on the blue side.  You are more than likely "cool" in skin tone, like 98% of the population, so you want to go with the blue reds instead of the orange reds.  You need to hold them up to one another side by side.  The best way to do this is either go to a makeup counter or Sephora or MAC store and compare the testers etc..  Someone there that is knowledgeable about colors should be able to help you tell the difference and select a good shade for you.

Hope this helps- good luck!
