Makeup & Skincare - Preservatives in Makeup

Expert: Lisa - 5/20/2004

Question
Hi Lisa,

I just wanted your opinion on makeup that's classified as "preservative-free."  I've seen this kind of makeup in a local health food store, and it's pretty pricey.
I've read that makeup that's truly preservative-free should be discarded after only a couple of weeks of use.  In your opinion, are there any benefits/risks to using preservative-free makeup compared to regular makeup?

Answer
Hi Sheryl!

Unfortunately I have never used preservative-free makeup (aside from mineral foundations) so I can not comment on the quality or benefit of using these products.

However, I do know that makeup that does not contain preservatives is highly perishable.  According to Fancl, a major Japanese cosmetics corporation that specializes in preservative-free cosmetics, preservative-free cosmetics should be discarded after three weeks to avoid contamination.

The obvious benefits to using this foundation is that it is better for sensitive skin and for those who are allergic to certain ingredients.

I found some interesting and insightful information on the web at www.paulabegoun.com.  She has great reviews and articles regarding commonly used ingredients in cosmetics.  Here is a blurb from her website about preservatives:

"Even if an "all-natural" product did exist, you wouldn't want to use it on your skin anyway. Think about a bunch of plants, fruits, or vegetables sitting in your refrigerator (or bathroom for that matter). What would happen if they didn't contain preservatives? In just a few days they would become moldy and disgusting. In contrast, skin-care products contain very "unnatural"-sounding preservatives, and that's great. According to many cosmetics chemists, a reliable preservative system helps avoid the risk of microbial contamination, which could cause problems for the eyes, lips, and skin."

Im sorry I could not really be of more help!  My opinion is, if there is a need for you to use preservative-free (i.e. allergy or existing condition), then it doesn't hurt to try.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,
Lisa :)
