About Susan Ruegger / Certified Tanning Consultant
Expertise
Although tanning does have it`s risks, there are ways to tan that are smarter and more health-conscious. I like to educate people on the risks, the benefits and the precautions when tanning indoors - and out! I like to educate consumers about the myths and truths about getting a tan. I can answer questions about exposure time, lotions for tanning and how to tan in moderation without burning. I know a lot about tanning beds, booths and bulbs. I am knowlegable of all the risks involved and the benefits.

Experience
I've been in the tanning industry for over 10 years. I am a Certified Tanning Consultant. Yes, I had to take a class and pass a test to get that title. However, I have learned most of what I know from experience, reading and dealing with people who choose to tan in a tanning bed, booth or out in the sun. I was the #1 tanning expert on the site, www.askme.com until it changed it's format over a year ago. I really enjoyed answering questions and educating people about this subject.

Makeup & Skincare - Tanning Bed Lotions

Expert: Susan Ruegger / Certified Tanning Consultant - 3/4/2004

Question
I have been told to use a special lotion (like Emerald Bay) to get a better, quicker tan when using tanning beds. I'm wondering what this is all about. Is it true? Is it worth the money? And is it recommended health-wise? Perhaps it will mean I can visit the tanning booth less often?

Assuming I should go for it, can you recommend a brand?

Answer
I did not believe the hype about lotions until I started using them and getting educated about them. Yes, they are worth the money. Some are better than others, but you can tan 45% better using a good lotion. (Emerald Bay is not one of the best, but it is very good).
There is a lot of research that goes into these lotions. They are specially formulated for skin that is exposed to UV light. Using a good lotion will:
1. Make you tan BETTER
2. Help you keep your tan longer
3. Allow you to tan less often
4. Improve the overall appearance of you skin

This is all true. I wouldn't dream of tanning without a lotion anymore. I watch people come into my salons and some don't want to pay the extra money for a good lotion. I think it is such a shame. They could be getting far more out of their tanning sessions. It's difficult when people don't take advice when I have already learned the hard way.
Emerald Bay is good, but my favorite now is any Designer Skin brand. They cost more but the bottles are large (13.5 oz).  They are full of vitamins that are good for the skin.
They contain antioxidants to reduce free-radicals. It's a wonderful product. The texture of your skin improves after just one application. My favorites are "believe" and "Worship".
Hope this helped you. Tan smart.

Sue
