Making Films & Videos - DV tape transfer

Expert: Brittanie Flegle - 10/26/2009

Question
I'm a newbie using SDHC cards in my new panasonic AG-HMC40 camera.  I'm going to be editing some footage I've shot with some shot by someone else using DV tapes.  Because my camera doesn't have a tape drive, what is the cheapest deck or used camcorder I could purchase for purpose of viewing and transfering the DV tapes into my non-linear editing system knowing I probably won't be using DV tapes again in the future?  Should I rent?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jojo,

One question: How many hours do you have to capture? If you only have a few tapes, then you could buy and return...But if you're opposed to that, I would look on eBaby and see what is available used. Sony is no longer selling their DV Handycams on their website (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCatalog?storeId=10151&l...) which means that you'll only find used DV Handycams online or new on a wholesaler's website. If you are in need of immediate action, I would go to Fry's and buy the cheapest DV camcorder they have. It'll probably be around $300.

Happy digitizing!

Brittanie
