Making Films & Videos - I have a question about using a green screen.

Expert: Brittanie Flegle - 10/22/2009

Question
I'm a graduate in film arts, but in one of my final classes, the professor told us how to film on a green screen (lighting it properly, etc.) but we ran out of time before he showed us how to actually put the two separate shots into one.

For example, I'm filming a short film really soon, and I have a scene where a guy is watching the news. The news anchor sketch will be fake. Pretty much I need the news anchor talking, and a picture of the person she is talking about floating in a box to her upper right (like they do on the real news). How would I accomplish this?
And thanks.

Answer
Hi Kyle,

This is easily done by simply adding another layer/video track of the image of the picture you want on top of the first video track. You can accomplish this using a quality non-linear editing program like Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro. (They have Express versions for cheap.) If you're a student, you can get them at a discount, something like 80% off!

The only reason you would want to use a green screen is to take out the background behind your subject. But since this project only involves adding an additional video track to the scene, you wouldn't have to use a green screen.

Let me know if this helps! I'm excited to hear more about your final project.

Brittanie
