Making Films & Videos - Fiscal Sponsorship Funding

Expert: Alessandro Machi - 6/15/2007

Question
By asking for tax-deductible donations from various foundations with fiscal sponsorship from an arts organization, what is the average sum of money made by asking for donations from top funders and local film societies?

Answer
Hi Trey, this is a very broad question and also somewhat out of my range of experience, and I didn't quite understand your question, are you an arts organization?

Did you mean to ask...  "I am involved in an arts organization, what is the average sum of money one can request from various philanthropic funding organizations and local film societies?

-----------------------------------------

It's an incredibly complex question and there are so many variables.  Are you a visible art organization that already has a track record?  Do you have non-profit status?

You may want to reverse engineer this and find out how much local philanthropy groups generally give out and see if they consistently give out to the same groups every year, along with donations to new organizations as well.  I'm of the opinion that unless one has contacts already in place, the donations come after an arts group is already doing what they say will they do and have built up a track record.

If you really need to fast track donations, then you probably need to have matching funds available.  As a general rule, I am of the opinion that those who donate funds like to see that the group has already raised some type of funding so what they give is supplemental versus being the cornerstone to an arts group surviving.  If what you are requesting is essential to your arts group surviving, that means you may not have matching funds in place yet and perhaps you may need to allow the philanthropy group to have representation on how their donation is being spent by your arts group, a situation that some arts group try to avoid.

It generally never hurts to ask, and even if you are rejected at first you probably will learn WHY your request is being rejected, or is much smaller than you hoped for.  If you are initially refused funding, the experience will still help you prepare for the next time you put together such a request.
