Question Hello, I've always wondered how a film is put together.. what comes first the scenes or the score? i.e. does the director shoot the whole film & then just hope that when he comes to commissioning/recording the score, that it will fit in? or does the director commission & record the score first & then film around the music? It's always interested me that, I mean certain scenes are perfectly timed & end just as the music does.. I take it that's no coincidence? if it's not, then how is it done.
Thanks, Howard
Answer Generally the music is added after the film is edited, however, many directors have already been previously inspired by the marriage of film and sound in other films they have already seen.
How many filmmakers haven't been inspired by the Jaws music theme and terrific editing montages that that film created. 2001 a Space Odyssey music theme would be another classic example of film merged with music that inspired others to attempt their own great film. Apocalypse Now would be another example, so would The Godfather. The Shower Sequence in "Psycho" produced such memorable music that filmmakers and the musicians they hire will probably always feel second fiddle to that original music score no matter what they come up with if they are trying to achieve the same type of tension in their movie that the Shower Sequence in Psycho created.
When the film is edited first and then a musical composition is added later, the really memorable music scores will inspire future filmmakers and perhaps even give them the confidence to know the music soundtrack will complete their vision because they have seen the results in previous great films.
On a workflow basis, Directors may choose a composer before the film has even been shot. Once the film is shot the composer is given a "picture lock" of the edited movie and then they begin the task of composing. I am not a composer but if I were, I would hope that the visuals and acting would just make me react in a musical way and I would begin the process of making music. Much much easier said, then done however, and many times the director and composer will have ongoing discussions in an attempt to create the ideal blend of music for the vision the director has in mind.
