Question I am going to be making a low budget independant film and I wanted to know if Windows Movie Maker would be enough or if I should purchase Final Cut, Avid or some other editing software.
Answer I like macintosh. If you purchase final cut pro you really get a lot for your money. However, to play it safe, find others that already own the video editing system you are thinking of buying and meet with them. Perhaps even bring them a very quickie little editing job to edit for you, something that will cost less than a hundred dollars. A quickie edit job could be editing 5-10 photos into a mini-montage with a soundtrack underneath it, or shoot a 30 second commercial idea and then have them edit it.
Negotiate a fixed price for the editor to edit your job and then see how well they can work the system when you are actually in the edit session with them. Make sure the final project is both burned to DVD and copied onto a mini-dv tape. Some systems shortcut what they offer by only allowing for DVD burning but not being able to make a copy to mini-dv tape.
