Malta - Ferry to Sciliy

Expert: Michelle Grech - 10/4/2007

Question
Hi Michelle,

My husband and I are coming to Malta Mid October and would like some advice to taking a ferry to Sciliy for 2 days.  Do you have any idea of the costs involved as well as where to stay in Sciliy.  This is our first visit to Malta so any other ideas of where to visit would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
In the site of virtu ferries www.virtuferries.com/index.aspx you will find all the informtion you will need re costs of ferries. they do day trips too. personally i would either go to pozzallo which is a shorter trip (approx 1.5 hours)and stay in Syracuse which is a lovely place or else go to Catania (approx 3 hours) and stay in Taormina. The cost per person including taxes is around Lm50 per person. You might want to check out flying there through www.airmalta.com as the trip is much shorter (20 minutes) and would probabbly be only slightly more expensive. Not sure about hotel costs. YOu might want to consider a day trip which will have excursions included rather than a 2 day stay.
There are quite a few places one should visit whilst here. it all depends on what you like. if you;re into history than i suggest the following:
hagar qim temples, the hypogeum and mnajdra temples, the catacombs in rabat, Mdina - the walled city, Valletta the capital.  You should pay a visit to some quaint villages like Marsaxlokk, and definitely a day trip to the smaller island of Gozo. Rather than going to Sicily which is a huge island and 2 days would barely scratch the surface, you might want to stay in Gozo for a few days. It is a very quiet and relaxing place. They call it the island where time stood still and when you're there you will realise that it is true! Also it is less hassle to include in your holiday. try going to www.visitmalta.com and you will get an idea of what you can do which is to your liking whilst here.
Hope i was of help!
michelle
