Question Hi Andrew,
Me,My girlfriend and 1 yr old daughter are going to Malta for 10 nights at the end of August staying at the Ramla Bay Resort, Mellieha Bay on an all inclusive basis, I was wondering if you would have any idea if 500 sterling (lm300 appox)would be sufficent as we are a little worried by the exchange rate.
Q2! If you are familiar with the resort or area do you know if there is a supermarket near by where we can buy nappies and babyfood etc.
Many thanks for any advice you can give us.
ps any recomendations for a great holiday
cheers
Tom & Family
Answer Dear Tom
As you are staying on an all inclusive basis at your hotel, LM300 should be quite sufficient to cover all other needs, such as taxis, bus fares, entry fees etc for your family. I know Mellieha bay itself fairly well, I've stayed in the Mellieha Bay Hotel once before. In the town of Mellieha itself there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants including a small supermarket, where i am certain you will be able to purchase the items you need.
By the way, don't be too worried by the exchange rate. In terms of cost Malta is about the same as the UK. So something that would cost 1 pound here, will cost 60 cents there. There are of course a few exceptions... Malta is very much cheaper for some things (such as bus fares!)
So yes, i believe LM300 will be enough for the three of you, and yes there is a supermarket in the town of Mellieha (though depending on where your hotel is situated, it could be a rather annoying walk up a long hill!).
Its difficult to know what to suggest as you have such a young daughter. If you will be hiring a babysitter, then i would suggest you and your girlfriend go and see the Blue Lagoon, Comino (and swim there!) Its beautiful, an expanse of crystal clear blue water surrounded by small islands and caves. It would be inadvisable to take your daughter as there are next to no facilities there. (To get there, you take a ferry for LM4 return from Cirkewwa, a town fairly near Mellieha, where you are staying.
Visiting Mdina (the old capital) and Valletta (the current capital) are must-dos.
Im sure there will be a local festa while you are there... each village celebrates its patron saints day with parades, bands and fireworks. Ask at your hotel, and if you can go along to one, they are great fun.
Any further questions, get back to me =)
Hope you have a great holiday in Malta. I just got back from there 3 days ago. Its very hot at the moment, clear skies everyday!
Have fun!
Andrew
