Question
First of all, I know this is totally my fault but I need help.  Here's my story.  I got my female maltese when she was 9 weeks old (she is now 16 mos).  I had NEVER had an animal before, not even a fish so I was/am new to this whole thing.  Anyway, I tried crating and she kept pooping and peeing in the crate.  I then let her have the kitchen and she did very well on the wee wee pads (I was going to keep her an indoor dog); then I gave her the kitchen and den and she did well (or so I thought).  She pees on the pad but I can't get her to poop on the pad.  I started walking her 2x day and she did very well.  For some reason she doesn't connect pee and poop -- she pees on the pad inside and poops outside.  But, she doesn't tell me when she has to go out -- I just take her out -- if I miss it, she goes on the rug in the den.  My next problem is that she never went up the stairs -- now she has been coming up the stairs at night.  She doesn't go down the stairs so I bring up a wee wee pad up but it doesn't seem to matter.  She goes poop, pee all over the carpet.  Now today - I caught her going pee on the carpet in the den which I though she never does!!  PLEASE HELP!!!  I will do anything - I know I probably confused her by doing half inside and half outside but at first I just wanted her to be an indoor dog.  Now, I don't care but I don't have any grass in my backyard and she doesn't seem to go anywhere but on the grass (when I walk her).  I will try anything - I just need to train her.  Thank you!

Answer
oh they are wierd little things puppies i mean when theyre mid poo in the house and you take them out to do it its like your putting them on hot coals and theres noway they will go lol-- but you have to break the habit.
pick a technique and stick to it.
it must be hard as you have to take her out on a walk to go.. or do you have a garden/ communual area if so a good reccomendation is the simple soloution potty training spray as it has a smell in it like the pads which you spray outdoors and it attracts the pup to it.

I think stick to the pads put more out if need be and keep putting pup on them eventually reduce the ammount of pads also please make sure to use a odour and stain remover spray from a pet outlet where your dog has been to the toilet as this is a key thing that prevents training as it attracts the dog constantly back to to the spot even if you think you have cleaned it all away as some cleaning products have chemicals such as chlorine in which also attracts dogs to go to the toilet there.
Remember dogs smell is so strong.

try to walk slow with her in a park in the same place as this may encourage her to go while you are out and remember when she does PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE!!!
maltese love praise and it encourages good behaviour
good luck let me know if you want any more help.
