Mobile communication is expanding rapidly. The first quarter of 2011 saw global sales of more than 428 million mobile devices, according to research firm Gartner. While voice communication remains the dominant mobile application, smartphones, which are capable of voice, video, Internet and data communication, represented almost a quarter of the sales reported by Gartner.
o Basic cell phones provide their subscribers with domestic and international wireless voice communication. Service providers offer a range of domestic tariffs to subscribers to make calls between cell phones on the same mobile network, between cell phones on different mobile networks, or between cell phones and landlines. You can also make international calls when you are outside your own country; however, international calls are subject to high tariffs known as roaming charges.
o A popular alternative to mobile voice communication is text messaging, using the Short Messaging Service (SMS). Costs are lower than voice calls, and most service providers offer tariffs that include a number of free text messages. According to the International Telecommunication Union, the volume of text messages tripled between 2007 and 2010, with around 200,000 text messages transmitted every second.
o Text messaging uses a cell phone's data communication capability. Service providers build on that data capability to offer subscribers a range of functionality using mobile applications, or apps. According to the website mobiThinking, developers launched some 300,000 apps between 2007 and 2010. The site reported that the most popular apps in the U.S. were games, news, maps, social networking and music downloads.
o Cell phones with Internet capability allow subscribers to surf the Web and use email. The website mobiThinking reported that within five years, mobile Web is likely to overtake PC-based Web as the most popular way to access the Internet. The growing popularity of mobile Web is due partly to improvements in cell phone screens and partly to the wider availability and lower cost of high-speed mobile broadband. The availability of high-speed broadband also lets you download video content and participate in conferences featuring video content.
o Smartphones combine all cell phone capabilities and add computing power to create a powerful business tool. Organizations are using this capability to develop business applications that improve the productivity of their employees. For example, field service engineers can download data on equipment they are about to repair, and then send reports to headquarters on completion.
o Organizations are also using smartphone capability to develop machine-to-machine communication between their data centers and equipment in the field. An example is a mobile application for smartphones that measures a number of parameters on oil wells and transmits the data to the head office data center, enabling the well owners to monitor wells cost effectively and have access to up-to-date information.
The single source communications platform.
Access during idle times. Traditional messaging platforms like paper letters, phone calls to the office phone, and even emails have a low direct-response rate because they can only be received and read when someone is sitting at their desk or when they are on their computer.
Opportunity to communicate while the iron is hot. Many times your mind will process things while you are doing something else.
A remarkably fast response rate. For some reason, mobile phone owners respond almost instantly to messages they receive. Accommodating personal communication preferences. The next advantage of using smart phones as the primary communication platform is its broad capability. It is no secret that some people prefer short text messages, others encyclopedia-length emails.
The cool factor. Sending text messages, videos, etc., is viewed by many as cool, as opposed to traditional emails and voicemails..
Global capability. modern 3G phones allow you to communicate wherever you are in the world.
The generation factor. Some generations, including my current crop of college students, refuse to use email and in many cases, even voicemail, but they love texting.
Not blocked by corporate.
Brevity. The fact that mobile phones are utilized on the run forces everyone to be brief in their messages. This brevity makes both reading messages and responding to them easier and quicker. It also forces recruiters to be more concise in their messages.
Lower cost. As mobile phone services get cheaper, there is less resistance to using my minutes
Differentiation. Because few firms currently use text messages and take advantage of the entire smart phone platform, it provides you with an opportunity to differentiate your firm from others.
Less spam. At least at the present time, the volume of spam that drives users away from email has not inundated smart phone applications. As a result, they are more willing to open and read your messages.
