AboutWalter L. Gibson Expertise I can assist with starting and growing a successful house cleaning business. Specific questions should relate to: marketing; customer relations; estimating jobs; employee hiring and management; office procedures; equipment and supplies procurement; data management; and scheduling.
Experience Experience in the area
I have run an independent residential cleaning business since 1989, and have experienced all aspects involved with this venture. I have created an owner's manual, daily procedures manuals for both office & cleaning staff, employee handbook, business letters, forms and documents necessary for an indepentent business owner to develop a successful cleaning business. These cleaning business forms, letters and manuals are available at MaidDocs.com
Question Can you give me some ideas of how I can motivate employees, how to make work a good environment and how to ensure sickness by staff is not done frequently in winter.
Would really appreciate.
Thanks,
Tim
Answer Do you have, and more importantly do you use, proper hiring and screening procedures, employee policies handbook, cleaning procedures manual, warning certificates and appropriate human resources paperwork? Your first step is to hire right! Then, with strict policies and procedures to follow, your employees know that they are working for a professionally run company, and will therefore be less likely to take advantage of you. Also, be certain that your employee files contain a record of all verbal and written warnings.
A very effective way to keep your employees in line is to reward outstanding achievers with appropriate pay increases and/or bonuses. Monthly or quarterly bonuses are based on performance, and annual pay increases are given on a merit basis.
Take the few employees who are most productive and supportive of you and put them in positions of authority over the other staff. These mid-management positions should provide a buffer for you.
If you do not already perform annual employee reviews, it is time to start. Using a point system you can treat everyone equally. You will need a formal performance review form which you should complete and file in the personnel record. This is a MUST in case you need to fire an employee for inability to comply with company policies.
You may need to revise your employee handbook to include verbiage such as: An inability to comply with this policy will result in forfeiture of bonuses and possible termination of the employee’s position due to non-compliance with company policies.
If you haven't provided your employees with a company policy handbook, annual performance reviews, and written warnings when they fail to comply with policies, then your future may include a lawsuit from a disgruntled employee.
