About John W Baldwin
Expertise
I can answer almost any question about Barry`s music and videos: Content, lyrics, instruments, arrangements. You know -- the important stuff! **** Please Note: I don't work for Barry or his organizations. I don't know him personally. I'm like that guy on PBS that talks about Mozart, the knowledge is based on 35 years of study, not from any insider information. **** --JB

Manilow, Barry - "Postponed" Manilow concert

Expert: John W Baldwin - 11/1/2009

Question
I bought 2 tickets to the October 16th Manilow concert at Sacramento's Arco Arena. The event has supposedly been "postponed". All ticketholders have been told is that the concert will be "sometime in Spring 2010".WHY haven't Mr. Manilow and/or his promoters set a new date? If the concert was postponed due to "hip surgery", why did Mr. Manilow play other venues   right before and right after October 16th? And the most important question I have is--WHY are ticketholders not being offered a refund? I have held tickets to postponed and cancelled events starring other artists and have always been told the rescheduled date quickly AND been offered a refund. This is the first time I have been been treated so poorly and have felt scammed. The promoters and Barry Manilow have my money (and the money of many other ticketholders too!)to use as they like for as long as they like. I have zip. I want my money back. Any information about how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I'm sorry you've had problems with your tickets. Unfortunately, I don't work for Barry's organization, or any part of his agencies/fan club/management. I answer questions based on published sources, or what I've seen him do or say at public events like show tapings and record signings. I'm just a fan, like you. Kind of like when some guy on PBS talks about Mozart who's an expert -- you know he's never known the guy personally, as Mozart has been dead since 1791. I'm an expert on Barry's music and career history, but I have no inside information on day-to-day decisions.

One thing I do know is that Barry Manilow does not really have your money. Well, he does, but he can't use it. Here's what happens in modern promotion tours: Barry's people sit down and figure out a tour schedule. They let Ticketmaster handle the selling of tickets, usually about 6 months prior to the venue date. The money that's collected sits in a bank account at Barry's bank until after the show is actually finished, then Barry's people are allowed to use it. Why? Because stuff gets cancelled, it rains, performers get injured, or die, and Ticketmaster needs to be able to get their money back, so it can refund customers when this happens. This became standard procedure after the Summer of 1977, when Elvis' death caused thousands of fans to be holding worthless tickets for concerts that had already been booked and sold. This isn't a law: this is something that Ticketmaster requires of performers who use their service (and really, these days, who doesn't?). It works out for Ticketmaster because they get to sell tickets as soon as they can. It works out for the performers because, even though they can't touch the money they've taken in for the venue, they're still collecting interest on that money from their bank.

Have you talked to the venue about getting a refund? I'm sure you'll be able to get one, no matter what Barry's people are saying. You didn't buy the ticket from Barry, you bought it from the Arco Arena. Give them a call. I wish I could be of more help, but hopefully this information is at least entertaining enough to keep you on hold with the Arena for a little while longer. Good luck!  --JB
