Subject: Metered air freshener 9-minute intervals
Question This is an odd question, but I am very curious. In public toilets they often install metered air fresheners--an aerosol can with a small clock to spray at timed intervals. In the US, almost every brand is timed to spray at 9, 18, or 36-minute intervals. That seems like an unusual interval. Why not 10,20,30 or 15,30,45? Do you know why 9,18,36 became the industry standard timing? Thanks for any answer (or guess) you can share.
Answer The amount of air freshener that is sprayed by the dispenser is set for a standard room size (predetermined by the air freshener company). For light odors, it took 36 minutes for the air freshener spray to dissipate. They took the 36 minutes and divided it in half for medium odors, and again for heavy odors.
