Manufacturing - Assembly vs Integration

Expert: Peter A. Crosby - 3/29/2009

Question
Dear Sir
Could you please tell me the difference between Integration and Assembly? Why the  in Automobile industry it is called "Assembly line" where as in aerospace industry it is called "Integration Hanger"; though the activity is to get final product after putting all components together?

Answer
Ratan:

Each industry has its own jargon, or terminology for the same physical process.

Other examples re: in some industries, the warehouses are called "service centers" versus another industry they are called distribution centers.

Trucks can be called: tractors/trailers; bobtails; rigs; power units

In the comparison you mention, airplanes are usually made in lots of one, or "make to order" whereas automobiles are made in lots of very higher volumes, such as, hundreds or thousands.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Pete Crosby
