About Bruce Biddulph
Expertise
Questions related to ships and shipbuilding history can be answered, and although primarily to do with British concerns and vessels, can find out about most ships - their fate, builder etc. Cannot give information or advice on day to day business or commercial technical matters, my main focus is on the ships and their histories.

Experience
I have built and run a number of shipping and shipbuilding websites and have a large pool of resources and contacts with people who either were or are in shipping and shipbuilding in the UK.

Subject: fuel consumtion in ocean shipping

Question
dear sir
would you please be so kind as to let me know about the fuel consumption of a merchant vessel per mile /or perday ,
the ships with about 35oooto40000 mts.capacity

best regards

Answer
It isn't an easy one to answer as many factors come into play - how loaded the vessel is, weather conditions, the condition of the ship's hull and the amount of use the auxiliary engines are put to, amongst other factors, will determine fuel use.

On average though, a vessel (more specifically a bulk carrier) of the size range you ask about, doing a speed of 13 knots and fully laden, would consume around 30-35 metric tons of fuel a day.
