Question
Hi my husband and I own a SMS Consulting/Agency. We're still new to this business thing and are having difficulty marketing ourselves to big corporations which is where we feel a lot our business will come from. My husband who works full time in the day as a SMS Administrator would love to eventually get SMS projects of his own to do with companies. He would also love to eventualy place skilled workers of his own into jobs that companies are looking for. Where do we start when it comes to getting consulting gigs of our own as well as contracts with companies in need of skilled workers? We've tried cold calling but it is soooo difficult ....any other ideas?Help please thanks.

Answer
Hi Bernidette!
First thing let me say welcome to the world of business it will never be easy but will reward those who try their hardest. One of the first things I tell business people to do is reasearch their competition, to find out what they are doing well and what they are doing poorly. Once you discover those areas that you can develop a niche around you can start planning on growing your business.

The next thing I recomend is create a list of up to 100 potental customers that you really want to work with. Once you have your list set up a stratigic plan to contact them over and over again until you get the customer to work with you. Keep in mind non-traditional approach things they don't expect and will get their attention.

Write press releases and send them out as well, create articles that show your expertise, find a problem they currently and offer to solve it but if you choose this option you better perform.

Another way to gain some awareness is to do some work for a not-for profit, get involved with local business groups as a speaker so people can learn about what you offer. I hope some of this has been of help to both of you best of luck.
Kip
