Question
Hi. My questions really pertain to marketing as a career. I know that you mentioned being a marketing consultant, which I assume takes many years to become, but can you tell me what an entry level position would be in terms of marketing consulting? What is the usual salary? How does one go about obtaining clients? Is there a lot of travel involved? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Danielle,
I started my career in the field of graphic design and moved into a Marketing Communications role, and from there to a strategic role. My path is not a traditional one, I moved through the ranks at a faster pace because of my skill set, and the company I worked for. Starting out as a marketing consultant would be a tough road, you really need some time and measurable results under your belt to launch a career as an independent consultant.

There are many entry level Marketing Assistant and Marketing Coordinator roles that pop up across industries, and these are a great foot in the door. I am not sure where you are located, but in upstate NY, entry level jobs are in the $21,000 - 25,000 range. The secret lies in being tenacious, creative, and a hard worker. Don't be afraid to take on new projects that challenge you to learn something new.

Another good way to gain experience and networking contacts is to join your local AMA chapter (www.marketingpower.com). Look to volunteer for a committee, or help out at an event. You may find your next employer!

I am also a big proponent of offering pro-bono advice to local non-profit organizations. I have volunteered time and services to the American Heart Association, and the Ovarian Cancer Support Group just to name a few. Many of these organizations are looking for help from the marketing community, and it is time well spent. You can further your career, and feel good about volunteering your time.

The key to being successful in marketing is to be accessible. Get out there, network, volunteer, and think of yourself as a sponge, taking in as much information as you can to build your skill set.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions, or expand on anything.

Best of luck!
Laurie
