Marketing Research - Estimating the number of U.S.A. retailers

Expert: Alex J. Caffarini - 8/8/2009

Question
Approximately how many retailers are there in America?

If this is not impossible to estimate, a rough idea of how many of any particular type of business would be somewhat helpful (i.e. - Pizza restaurants, fast food restaurants, auto service garages, etc.)

I need to get a rough idea of how many advertisers are in America.

Answer
Dave,

You can find this information by going to the Web site of the U.S. Census Bureau.  Every five years, the Census Bureau conducts an Economic Census, quantifying the number of businesses within each industry, along with various other statistics.  The Census Bureau also generates estimates of the number of firms and establishments each year, based on the previous census.

The first thing to do would be to identify the specific North American Industrial Classification Standards (NAICS) code for the retail subsectors you are interested in.  You can find that at the Website: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2007.

For all retail trade establishments, there are two two-digit NAICS codes -- 44 and 45.  The codes can be as many as six digits, the more digits being used for smaller subsets of the larger sector (e.g., Furniture AND Home Furnishing stores have a NAICS of 442, while just furniture stores have a NAICS of 4421).

Once you've identified the NAICS code, look for Economic Census statistics on those sectors.  The Census Bureau looks at both establishments and firms.  Establishments are the total number of locations, regardless of whether they belong to the same firm.  Firms are the total number of organizations within the industry, regardless of how many establishments they have.

That should tell you a rough count of the number of retailers there are.
