Question
can my mother have my marriage annulled? I am 17 and my husband is 18. She took us to get our license and was present at our wedding. Now she is afraid I'm going to go live with his family and not stay with her. What can I do? Please help!!

Answer
Hi Patty~

The answer to this is most likely no.  In most states the age of consent is 17, with 18 being legally an adult.  And since she was present at your wedding, didn't object to it, took you to get your license, etc.  It would look pretty bad on her in court if she were to try to do this.  Now that you're married and of legal age, she can't tell you who you can and can't live with.  You should be able to ask the circuit clerk of the court, in the county you were married in, what the legal age to become married is w/o a parental consent.  If it's 17, like I'm pretty sure it is, then you have nothing to worry about.  She can't annul your marriage, she'd have to take you to court in order to do that anyway.  And you can contest it before the judge, should she try to get it annulled.
