About Jamey D. Olsen
Expertise
I can answer a wide range of questions - the pros and cons of many different arts, what works and what doesn’t, the differences between styles, as well as the history of styles or origins. I can advise on proper technique, how to apply techniques, or answer "How would you defend this?" type questions. I also have an extensive library of books and videos, so if you ask me about something I haven’t trained, I have the resources to track down an answer for you. I am also involved in the growing sport of MMA (mixed martial arts). For more detailed information on me and what I train and teach please check out my website www.keishidojo.com

Question
Thank you for your time, i practice Jun Fan and wado ryu karate and i have always been taught to fight aggressive and strike with elbows, knees, eye gouges and knee breaks. But i was interested in Aikido at one time, but can you really flip and throw big guys? Take a 260 pound guy and redirect his balance and flip him? It seems very hard to do aikido? what you think?

Answer
Josh,

Yes it is.  I actually had a 120lb, 4'10" girl bring down and man that was 260+lbs, and 6'3".  The trick is using their momentum and leverage.  The element of surprise is essential too.  If the attack is not a committed one then the techniques in Aikido are a lot less effective and harder to do.

The particular type of Aikido we train is actually blended with styles like Jun Fan to make it even more practical, and it seems to work very well.

I hope this helps and good luck.
