Expert: Jamey D. Olsen Date: 6/12/2008 Subject: Expanded question on girls martial arts...
Question Hi:
My daughter has developed her mothers appreciation for martial arts and would like to study them. She is small now and would like to learn something that is really effective for girls. I have been told that there is such a technique which was developed by and for women which relies are their natural advantages. However, no one can tell me what exactly that is! Can you? I is supposedly a Chinese form which was developed by some sort of nun or something. I don't want to offend anyone but my first thought was it was yet another "urban" legend but people keep telling me it is real but yet they can't tell me what it is.
I hope you can correct me on this. She is very young (5) but very focused and athletic and has time to learn.

Answer Brundan,
I would look to Wing Chun if you have it in your area. That is the style Bruce Lee studied and I believe it was developed by a woman.
My second choice would be Aikido. Many women like that style as it is based on leverage and not muscle. I teach a lot of girls Aikido and they do really well too.
I hope this helps, good luck.
