Question
Hello! I'm Vivian and I am a 12 year old almost teen girl who would like to know what style of martial arts should I learn. There are so many to choose from but I need one or two that requires only about 3 months of school or teachings from a Asian teacher since that is my time out of school. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Vivian,
Thank you for choosing me as your expert.
I am concerned by your comment that you "need one or two that requires only about 3 months of school or teachings." What are you hoping to achieve in that amount of time? Why wouldn't you be able to continue your studies after your school classes have started again? The study of a Martial Art takes many years not a few months. Many have made it a life long pursuit.
I also would need to know what you are hoping to gain by your study of the Martial Arts? What classes are available in your immediate area? How far are you able to travel for classes? What are your budget considerations if any? Answering those questions will certainly help narrow down the field of realistic options. I would be happy to try to give you a more precise answer after you have answered them.
All well taught Martial Arts are going to have elements of Self Defense, flexibility, and discipline. The Instructor will have a much greater impact on how good a fit the classes are for you, rather than the Style itself. Sit in on as many different classes in your area as possible to see how the classes and techniques are being taught. Focus on finding the right instructor over finding the "right system." Take the classes offered by the instructor(s) who you feel most comfortable with. That is always the best way to get started.
Once you've done that you will need to work hard and discipline your Mind, Body, and Spirit.
I hope my answer has been helpful to you. Please feel free to ask me any follow-up questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Sensei Vice
