Martial Arts/JKD? or something else?

Hello Eric, my name is Aharon. I am looking for a Martial art that would fit me needs. I have no interest in Sports or competition.
I want to learn a Striking Art that Favors Speed over slower powerful strikes. I want it to stress Self defense Practicality.
I heard Wing Chun or JKD would fit the bill but there are so many different branches or types of each that I dont know where to look.
also the Instructor is very important, So 1st I want to know What Martial art would best fit my Criteria and second, do you know any reputable instructors in the North Jersey or NY(Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens Area) that you could Recommend?
Thank you,for your time.

Hi Aharon,

I hope you are doing well.

I know JKD would fit your criteria, assuming you find and study with a good instructor.  Although I have never studied with him, I heard good things about Dino Orfanos:

Alternatively, I suggest that you look into a full JKD instructor under Paul Vunak / Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS). Paul's "Contemporary JKD" has a heavy emphasis on street self defense.

Even though Wing Chun (or Wing Tsun)appears to rely on speed, it relies on feel and reflex. Although strength helps, Wing Chun was arguably developed by a woman, is a "soft" art, and can be practiced even as a senior citizen. Based on personal experience, I recommend that you look into an instructor who is part of the Leung Ting Wing Tsun lineage.

Both arts are practical for self defense.  They require training through repetition to develop the respective attributes.  There is no substitute for hard work.  I wish you the best in your quest for an art that you can make your own.
