Martial Arts/leg exercises

I have a question.  I am a martial arts student and I try to pick up additional knowledge whenever and wherever I can.  I am working on my leg strength for stances, kicks, agility, etc.  What would be 2 or 3 of your favorite and or suggested exercises to develop leg power, strength, agility?  Thank you, in advance, for your help!

Hi Kevin,

Good to hear that you are training in martial arts.

I am sure that will get a variety of answers to your question. I suggest that you seek the wisdom of many counselors and use what works for you. Below are my humble opinions.

It depends on your training objective (self defense, competition, or fitness). In all cases, working on your coordination and timing are important, partly because kicking is normally done in a dynamic context (ex. your opponent is moving towards you, you are moving towards your opponent, etc.)

An average beginner should work on their strength & flexibility. He & she can use gross, every day movement (ex. think kicking down a door for a front snap kick) when they first start. The kick does not have to e perfect.

As the person gets more advanced, he / she should continue working on their strength / flexibiity  and refine their kicking technique (ex. focus on weight distribution, angle of support knee, part of foot that makes contact, breathing, etc.).

Doing dynamic stretching, body weight leg exercises, and practicing my kicks when I am doing my forms (aka katas) and controlled sparring work for me.

Bruce Lee said "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

I wish you the best in your training endeavors.
