About Colin Wee
Expertise Do you need some insight on your martial arts path? Do you find you're lacking direction? I'm happy to share my knowledge as a martial arts and self defence instructor.Colin does Traditional Taekwondo in Perth W. Australia.
Experience Started training in 1983 and have participated in three main styles in three continents over the last 23 years. I have a 4th Dan in Taekwondo, 1st Dan in Renzhe Kung fu, and while unranked, have trained for several years under an Aikijujutsu instructor. I have teaching certification from two organisations, and play an active role in an international martial arts organisation. The last couple of years have seen me researching and documenting the evolution of Taekwondo and its bunkai. My approach is to pair pattern applications and drills to student skill level. Lastly, while I enjoy the respect and comradeship from my colleagues, I am an instructor working with a small group of students, and am on my own martial path.

Subject: Choosing Martial Art
Question I would like to know which Martial Art is right for me physically. I have a small body frame. I'm "boney", long skinny arms, etc. Because of the way my body is built, I don't consider it suitable for blocking or offensive moves, since I lack strength for an effective punch, and I lack mass for effective blocking(skinny arms, etc) So, I'm looking for a style that doesn't empathize such techniques, and focuses on other ways to subdue an opponent. Thank you
Answer My apologies for not getting back to this answer more quickly - I've been sick with stomach cramps until last night.
Okinawan 'hard styles' - basically like Shotokan Karate was 'invented' for small, light people. But make no mistake, the training aims to toughen you up in order that you are able to maximise your physical and mental performance in case you require it.
Other soft style karate like Goju Ryu or Uechi Ryu require hard conditioning of your body in order to accept blows and to dish out several strikes to opponents. This might not be what you are looking for.
Styles like Wing Chun, Aikido, and Escrima may not require a great deal of strength as a prerequisite, and improves as the practitioner gains a modicum of skill. These might serve you well.
If you are looking to subdue a person with little or no strength, you will be hard pressed to find any unarmed art that will help you in an expedient way. Perhaps you should also look at how willing you are to come half way? And what you may like to build - strength or speed? This may help narrow your search.
Best regards,
Colin
