Question hey
about 6 months ago i tore the muscles on the left side of my thoracic spine. i think it is the big muscle that joins the ribs. it really hurt to rotate left or right and it took 6 weeks and a course of anti-inflammatories to get back to any kind of movement. i am a surfer and swimmer so i am constantly extending the arm and aggrivating that muscle.
about 8 weeks ago the problem re-occured and its been 8 weeks in pain. i was doing light stretches and strengthening but this only seemed to aggrivate it. it wouldbe ok for a day and then gone again, painful to rotate, sit etc.
the thing is i am on vacation in south america now. it was supposed to be a surfing trip but i cant surf. im going home in 4 months and ive kind of accepted that i wont surf in that time. the question is, how long should i leave this to settle before doing light stretches and strengthening. and also when i go home i am determined to be back in the water after 3 months of treatment. what do you recommend, infrared treatment, ultra-sound, massage. and how much, how often. im afraid i have done a lot of damage with much scar tissue built up. is it possible with massage to return the muscle for full functioning. right now im wooried that doing no stretches will lead to the muscle healing too short, but any time i do light stretches i seem to aggrivate it and bring it back to the point of injury.
any advice would be much appreciated.
Answer Hi Jack,
With your ribs and back it could be any of the muscles and around that particular area there are atleast 10 muscles. You need to get an assessment and figure out which muscles are causing the problem. I assure you it won't be all of them. To me it sounds like it is your serratus anterior, multifidi, all of the rib muscles and possibly your mid trapezius. Go see a doctor, get an assessment from a massage therpaist and go from there. Although I would recommend going to see the doctor before the massage therapist as you might just get sent to the dr anyways. These things take time. Make sure you take it easy.
As for the stretching try to stretch after you take a hot bath or shower as your muscles will be more relaxed and they will move easier. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.
