Massage - cranio-sacral therapy

Expert: John Nickolas Barakitis - 8/2/2009

Question
I am a CMT and currently operating my own in home practice for therapeutic massage. I am looking to expand my practice to include Myofascial release and CranioSacral Therapy.  I recently purchased a text book entitled Modalities for Massage and Bodywork which includes both of these techniques, to include an instructional video, and a detailed chapter overview on each modality.  I recognize that CranioSacral Therapy is a very non-invasive, light touch application toward healing and that it will take time to grasp the techniques in order to identify the craniosacral rhythm.  My question is does this modality require additional certification?  It does not state that in this textbook.  I live and practice in the state of Idaho where there are no laws regulating massage.  I will not incorporate this in to my practice without doing study and building confidence but unsure of requirements for posting this as a modality etc... any advise?  I also have the same question for Myofascial Release?

Answer
Hi Crystal

Thank you for the opportunity to answer this question.

The massage industry as a whole is going through the processes of growing into an amazing field to work in, however currently there are those in the industry who lack the understanding of what is the necessary training for continuing education.

I go through this in my classes as well when we talk about online CEU courses for CMTs. Books and training videos are just not enough and those who sell material this way are sadly in it for the money and not for maintaining the integrity of our industry.

My advice is to get hands on training by either signing up for the class by the people who founded them: Cranio Sacral Therapy (Upledger Institute, http://www.upledger.com/) and Myofascial Release (John Barnes, http://www.myofascialrelease.com/home.asp ) both offer classes near major cities, hopefully close enough to you.

In the meantime study what you have, but consider it an academic exercise. Maybe even find a CMT that was professionally trained in these modalities that lives near you and work out something with them for hands on training.

It's a tough call when working in a non-regulated state, it's up to you Crystal, follow your intuition on this one.

To your success,

John Nickolas Barakitis
