Mazda Repair - Miata Engine/Clutch Replacement

Expert: Mp2 - 10/26/2009

Question
Hello,

You were very helpful last time I inquired about my 99 Miata engine replacement so I figured I'd count on you again. I have decided to replace my 99's engine with an 02 1.8. I know the 02 has VVT but as I wont be changing the wiring harness I will just plug the holes in the block and run it without. My question comes in about the transmission/clutch. I would like to replace the used clutch with a stage 1 aftermarket to get a little better wear and the security that I wont have to get this taken apart again! Should I be shopping for an 02 clutch or a 99. Some say they will fit 94-05, but those are a lot more than the ones made for the 99-01. Are the clutches from 99 and 02 interchangeable? Thanks so much in advance for the help, again.

Will

Answer
All 1.8 liter clutches are the same.  A stage 1 ACT is $415, includes the disc, plate, TO bearing and pilot bearing and alignment tool.  (about 20% heavier bite than stock, doubled centrifugal springs , organic compound, more than adequate for street performance use).  "No Comment" on the VVT issue.
