Question i have a 90 miata with 123 k miles. every time i start it it gets a annoying whining or squealing sound. my mechanic said it should be the belts but need to know if it could be something else so i can go to a shop and specifically ask what i want.
Answer If it is the belts the they are either loose or worn. Engine off you should be able to tug on them to see if they feel loose. Most common is the alternator belt since it was a v groove design in the early years, more prone to stretching. Grab a flashlight take a look, if they show signs of cracking or fraying it's time for new belts.
The noise is most likely is belt related however, squealing could also be fan motor related or even clutch pilot or release bearing related. Each has a distinctly different noise associated with it but, customers commonly think squealing is belt related.
123k is still a baby around this place. Our oldest is 436k.
Your biggest area of concern should revolve around timing belt services, front oil seal and most importantly crankshaft keyway fitment, done improperly can lead to crankshaft failure. Be cautious if your not aware this has led to the demise of many 1990 model Miatas.
