Mechanical Engineering - drive transmission (shaft and gear fitting)

Expert: Masoud Fakhrabadi - 2/27/2008

Question
hi, im doing this project where i need to select a drive transmission for a pump and motor... ive chosen to use gears, ive done the calculations to select the gears and found the gears i need in a gear catalogue...

however, the motor comes with a shaft of 8mm diameter.. and the gear i obtained has a bore(hole where the shaft fits) of 15mm...

now i know if the shaft was bigger than the bore, the hole for the gear can easily be widened using machine tools, however, in this case the shaft is smaller.. seeing as it comes with the motor i dont think i can use a bigger shaft...

so my question is, is there some way of making the shaft fit the larger gear hole?

i would really like to avoid redoing the calculations because its a bit fiddly and took me ages to get the right gear, and one that actually exists..

i would appreciate your help.. thanks..

Answer
Dear Joseph,

your question has a simple solution.
you should prepare a cylinder with 15mm outer radius and 8mm inner radius.
Then fit this cylinder on the shaft of motor and assemble the gear on it.
after it you can connect them by routine ways like welding.

If you have any problem, please do not hesitate to ask it.

Best regards

M. Fakhrabadi
