Expert: Masoud Fakhrabadi - 2/20/2008

Question
How to construct a Goodman Diagram to estimate fatigue strength for varying mean stresses in a shaft and hence find a suitable survival probability for the shaft?

Answer
Dear Jonathan,
for constructing Good man diagram with variation of mean stress you should use from this formula:
s'm/sy+s'e/se=1/fs
you have sy and se of handbooks for all steels and other materials.
now you can find you diagram
for more information refer to :mechanical engineering design, shigley
if my answer isn't sufficient contact again
best regards
