Mechanical Engineering - Mechanical Engineering Interview

Expert: Pat March - 12/12/2006

Question
Hi, my name is Megan Kraus and I am currently a sophomore at Delran High School in New Jersey.  I am taking an engineering class through Project Lead the Way because I am interested in becoming an engineer.  In my class we are to write a report on a field of engineering and have an interview with an engineer of that field. I would appreciate if you would answer a few questions below.  (they do not have to be elaborate or detailed answers)

1. Why did you choose to pursue mechanical engineering?

2. What are some of your accomplishments?

3. What do you like most about being a mechanical engineer?

4. What do you least like about being a mechanical engineer?

5. What do you think are the most important skills needed to be a mechanical engineer?

6. After college, did you find a job quickly?

7. What jobs were available to you as a mechanical engineer?

8. What is your daily routine?

9. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your job?

10. What do you plan on doing in the near future in your career?

--thanks!

Answer
1. I wanted to be involved with aircraft and engine development.
2. Developed the EasyBake Oven Toy and the Moldmaster toy. Also developed a rational method of designing axial flow fans.
3. What do I like most: Just about everything!
4. Stupid bosses.
5. Listening to be sure you understand the person talking. AND
being able to analyse a problem and invent a solution.
6. Had that settled well before graduation.
7. Jobs available vary with time.
8. Daily routine: None. Infinitely variable!
9. Since I am now "retired" I must say that the major advantages are being able to work on what I want whenever I want. Disadvantage is that resources to go farter are quite skimpy.
10. Continue to "unretire" as much as possible. I look for projects on the web...
