Mechanical Engineering - Mounting gears/axles for a project.

Expert: Pat March - 7/7/2007

Question
I have never worked with gears before and am wondering how to mount a gear/axle? This is for a small science project to show how a gear train works. Do I need to mount the gear to the axle and then the axle to a wood or metal base and how do I secure the gear to the axle and the axle to the base? Thanks.

Answer
That depends on what you are trying to get the gears to do. And how big the holes are. And how much torque they need to transmit. For a demonstration perhaps they need to transmit zero torque so the gear may be loose on the shaft. Many small plastic gears are designed to simply press fit on the shaft. Some are soldered on. Some are fastened by drilling a hole through the hub and shaft and pinning them together.
