Mechanical Engineering - Poiseulle and Couette flow

Expert: T.K.sesha Subramanian - 7/15/2003

Question
What is the importance of studying Poiseulle and Couette flow?  What are the areas of applications?

Answer
couette flow is the flow of viscous fluid between two plates, but one plate is moving with certain velocity and the other one is fixed. this is done with extenal pressure gradient. if there is no pressure gradient we can simply use Newqtion's law of viscosity. but for couette flow we should use navier's stokes equation. while doing calculations for bearings and all we should use couette flow.
where as poiseulle flow is the flow between two fixed plates or pipes. this will be useful to find the frictional losses.
