Mechanical Engineering - Reciprocating Air Compressors

Expert: T.K.sesha Subramanian - 9/24/2003

Question
I am looking for an online engineering applet or simulator to check my energy balance equations.

Does compressor input power - indicated power = convection and radiation losses?

Your response to this query would be greatly appreciated

Yours faithfully
Brad Kucks

Answer
the power terms regarding compressor are, 1)couplling power 2)indicated power 3)blade power 4)effective power, all are in descesnding order.

coupling power-indicated power=mechanical losses

indicated power-blade power=leakage loss+ return flow loss

blade power-effective power=loss due to friction

hope you might have understood better. the above mentined losses will come in to picture only when the heat transfer is neglected. while including also heat transfer these terms will come. but at any point of time, the difference between coupling and indicated will never be equal to heat losses alone.

for further more details please refer standard heat transfer books. BEJAN, CENGEL... are few books to get clear idea about convection and radiation and at the same same time you also refer books for turbomachinery.
