Mechanical Engineering - solid fuel heating problems

Expert: Al Hall - 1/23/2007

Question
Hi there,
Really hope you can help.  We stay in Scotland and have moved into an old stone cottage with solid fuel heating system.  The parkray chevin 99 fire has a back boiler system in place.  The radiators only seem to get warm at best.  On a rare occassion, they have become quite hot but this is a hit or miss and happens for no apparent reason.  we always have the fire piping hot, my husband has taken off each radiator and cleaned the suldge, drained the system, put a cleaner through and fitted a new grundfos pump and we are still having problems - any suggestions?  It is snowing now and we have 2 babies who always seem to have ice cold hands and noses - we would appreciate any suggestions.
Many Thanks Indeed,
Gaynor

Answer
Well, Home heating systems really is not my area of expertise.  But from your description, It sounds like you have air trapped in your heating system.  You should have a vent valve near the radiators, or somewhere in your system.  Try to get all the air blead from the system.  Also, check to see that there is sufficient water in the system as well.  It was good that you cleaned out the system.

Let me know how it goes,

Al
