Medical College of Georgia - Pre-Med student in need of advice

Expert: J.P. Saleeby, MD - 1/24/2008

Question
    Dear Readers,
I am currently attending a community college in a effort to close the gap between me and university and utimatly a medical school. However I have a problem that is nagging at me. My first 3 attempts at college resulted in W's in basically all of my classes. In total I have 12, yes, 12 W's. I am terribly concerned that these marks during my irresponsible teenage years will "ban" me from getting into a medical school in the future. If such marks were to not allow me to go to a medical school it would be a terrible blow to me but at least I would have an answer. I am not expecting any type of exact answer but just some feedback on my situation from the readers. I feel that I am a very capable individual and could hopefully call himself a doctor one day, I am just afraid that my past may overshadow my current qualities. I would greatly appreciate any feedback that anyone has to offer.

Answer
Phil,

Not sure what Ws are, but Med. School in this country (USA) is very very competitive.  Only one in about 10 will be accepted.  Good grades (mostly As are almost a must).  You may indeed pay for your early years.  In the interview (if you get that far) you may be able to convince the selection committee that you have changed.  MCAT scores if high can come to the rescue.  Also I have heard that taking a masters degree and doing well can outshine poor grades in undergrad studies.
