Medical College of Georgia - Entering medical school after 3 years

Expert: J.P. Saleeby, MD - 5/28/2007

Question
Hello, how are you doing? Luckily I have the opportunity to graduate with a degree in Biology after three years. I have a 4.0 GPA and have spent plenty of hours volunteering. I plan on applying for medical school but have a few uncertainties. First of all, I will take the MCAT in January. As such, do you think I will have enough time to be for the interviews? More importantly, do you think I should try to make it to medical school after three years or take more sciene courses to be better prepared? A friend has advised me to stay longer so that hopefully I get a scholarship. Do you think this can happen?

Thanks----

Answer
Suhail,

This is a very personal question and your decision must feel right.  I also finished a Bio Major with minor in Chem in just over 3 years but was persuaded by fellow college students to stay on and finish on time so I did and took a minor in philosophy which has helped me in life.  Don't rush through... Medicine will always be there.  Despite what you think, taking extra science courses will not really help you in med school... a lot of what you have already taken (biochem, micro, etc.) is repeated but more intense... my advice... take your time and study for the MCAT and even take it a second time if you wish to improve your scores.  With a 4.0 you should be a good candidate.  As you can only enter in the fall, I would suggest that you enjoy your undergrad years.... because once you start med school there are really no breaks.
